For years I've been thinking my fish finders were "liars". Sometimes they would show fish where I knew there were none and other times they would show me nothing when I could see fish in the clear water. I started using my electronics as expensive thermometers, clocks and depth finders. After a fishing buddy recommended this book and assured me I wasn't going to be reading a technical user manual, I began to see all the information I'd been missing. This book gave me the courage to experiment with the settings and tune them to the specific structure and cover environments. Being able to recognize and interpret the bottom make-up, contours and color lines has changed the way I fish. I am waiting to try out my new education on the Spring spawn. I am confident that my fishing prowess just took a big leap. Mr. Allphin, I thank you!

I am not sure why others didn't like this book. The fish finder manuals tell you HOW to adjust things like range and sensitivity, but they don't tell you WHY you should adjust them. This little book tells you WHY you will get more information if you don't just put your fish finder on "Auto" and turn on the "Fish ID" setting. I like the pictures he included of some of the screens, and with the Kindle I could make the pictures bigger. Even his stories were helpful. He was describing scenerios where the fish finder did (or did not) do specific things for him and what the result was or how he adjusted for the information.

I obviously have been missing the majority of the information I could get from the fish finders--and buying the newest and greatest wouldn't change a thing. I need to adjust for the information that I want.

I have upgraded my fish finder three times and spent more money. They've just gotten more color and more complicated. Ive put this book to use and it has changed my fishing. The key is to match observation with what you see on your finder. This book teaches you how to do it. I've caught more six pound plus fish this year than in 20 years of bass fishing I finally started catching deep water winter fish with regularity I learned how to identify bait fish. I took some time out of fishing to work through this and it is returning big dividends. I was thinking about down and side imaging and the new 360 but I know I have all the technology I need. I just ad to put it to work. The money I save will go to baits, equipment and more time on the water.

Don't waste your money like I did. This "book" would better be described as a pamphlet (about 40-50 pages). Other than one chapter that provides some information about making three or four changes from automatic to manual settings, the book is fluff. The first three chapters deal with the history of fish finders, myths about fish finders, and how fish finders work; none of which enhanced my ability to use my fish finder. Chapter four actually has some potentially useful information. The last two chapters and the conclusion is more fluff about being a good observer on the water and so on. Like many books about fishing, this one is replete with fish stories that help fill the pages, but don't accomplish much else. Additionally, the book has no illustrations. I was expecting or hoping for some good illustrations to help me understand and interpret what one sees on fish finder screens when passing over structure, forage and fish. The only good thing I can say about this "book" is that I was able to read it in about an hour. Wish I had spent my money on a new lure!

Fish finders can be very useful, but they can be a pain if you do not understand them. This book points the reader in the right direction for those who need a better understanding. I have used a variety of fish finders over the years with a limited understanding with some success.
However, reading this book has given me enough information to give me new direction on ways that I can improve my fishing pleasure.

Author spoke in generalities and struggled with technical concepts. Virtually no explanation on interpreting signals, frequency, calculating cone area, etc. 75 percent of this book was comprised of goofy stories that had no affect on understanding.

I found this book to be helpful to read before buying a depth finder. I would recommend that you read if going to purchase a depth finder soon.

Very informative read. I truly learned a lot from this book. I've only been using fish finders for a little more than three years and this book was what I needed in terms of practical knowledge. Highly recommend this book.

I was expecting a book that explains how to read and understand what is displayed on LCD and how to fine tune all settings ( sensitivity, colors, contrast, etc.)

The author has been teaching people for twenty years how to best utilise their fish finder so hes speaking from experience and this genuinely comes across throughout this book. Like most tools it's how to get the best out of them not just switch it on and hope for the best. I know I will get better results and I thought this was a great resource, well written, informative and easy to read too.
